Nsoatre (B/R), Dec. 07, GNA - The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has warned unscrupulous fire volunteers to desist from extorting monies from culprits of bush fires to avoid arrest and prosecution.
It said some dishonest, greedy and fraudulent fire volunteers, instead of sending arrested bush fire culprits to the appropriate quarters to face the law, “rather settle the cases in their homes and farms, extort monies from such unpatriotic persons and set them free”.
Assistant Divisional Officer (ADO) Alfred Brocke, the Sunyani West Municipal Fire Commander, gave the warning at the 35th National Farmers' Day celebration, on the theme: “Enhancing Small Scale Agriculture towards Agribusiness Development” at Nsoatre in the Bono Region.
He said those fire volunteers were tarnishing the image of the GNFS and the wonderful idea behind the formation of the Fire Volunteer Squads (FVS).
ADO Brocke said fire volunteers had been given training to enhance their capability to save lives and property in a fire-threatening situation but not to engage in activities to make the mandate non-achievable.
He, therefore, cautioned that the law would deal drastically with any fire volunteer caught in such an act of bribery and corruption.
The GNFS would continue to champion the bush fire prevention campaign across the county, especially during the dry season, to protect investments in agriculture, the environment and wild life, he said.
Meanwhile the Municipality had honoured 10 categories of farmers for their outstanding production and best farming practices as well as the Best Agriculture Extension Agent for his dedicated and meritorious services.
Besides the overall best, first and second runner-ups, there were also best crop, livestock, fish, physically-challenged, female farmers, best youth in agriculture, and best vegetable farming group (cooperative).
Ms Vida Yaa Tabiri, 43, and a native of Nsoatre, was adjudged the Overall Best Farmer.
She is into food, cash crops and fish farming and owns a great number of livestock and poultry.
She was given an Apsonic Motorbike, a spraying machine, a radio set, wellington boots, a cutlass (crocodile machete), soap, and a half piece of cloth.
