People of Yamfo benefit from NADeF projects

Yamfo, (B/A), May 30,  GNA – Mr Jeop Coenen, General Manager of Newmont Ahafo Mine in the Asutifi District of Brong-Ahafo,  on Friday inaugurated three projects constructed at the cost of GH¢344,988.82 for the chiefs and people on Yamfo,  in the Tano North District.

They included a multi-purpose community library, two unit Nurses quarters and a recovery ward for the Yamfo health center.

The Ahafo Development Foundation (NADeF), funded the construction of the facilities. The Foundation was established in 2008 as a mechanism to manage Newmont’s sustainable community development commitment to its 10 mine-take communities.

NADeF is funded by the Ahafo mine, based on contributions from one dollar of every ounce of gold sold and one percent of net pre-tax profit of the mining company.

Mr Coenen explained that currently the Foundation had accumulated 17.5 million dollars out of which 63 projects had been constructed in the mine’s operational communities.

They are Techire, Afrisipakrom, Yamfo and Susuanso, Adrobaa in the Tano North District, as well as Kenyasi Numbers One and Two, Ntotroso, Wamahinso and Gyedu, in the Asutifi North District.

He noted that though many mining companies are facing challenges because of the fall in gold price, Newmont would continue to execute best social responsibility programmes that would benefit the local people.

Mr Kwame Saarah-Mensah, NADeF Board Chairman, explained that aside the infrastructure projects, the Foundation had also awarded GH¢5,306,073.01 worth of scholarship to 4,986 Senior High School and tertiary students, and 499 apprentices in the 10 communities.

Since 2013, NADeF has received a partnership from Liebherr Mining Company Limited, under a human resource programme, where brilliant and highly motivated students from any of the 10 communities offering science, have the opportunity to win full scholarship worth GH¢15,000, he said.

Nana Ansu Adu Baah, Chief of Yamfo, commended Newmont for pursuing excellent social responsibility programmes in the communities,  and was optimistic that the relationship between the mining company and the people would be strengthened for their mutual benefits.
