Road accidents increase in Winneba
Winneba, Jan 31, GNA “ A total of 44 people were killed through road accidents last year in the Winneba Police District as against 33 in 2012.
They were made up of 16 females and 28 males against 8 females and 25 males in 2012,
Assistant Superintendent of Police John Paul Akonde in Charge of Winneba District Motor Traffic and Transport Unit told the GNA in an interview.
During the year under review 132 commercial vehicles, 110 private cars and 22 motor bikes were also involved in accidents between January to December 2013 against 108 commercial vehicles, 87 private cars and 8 motor bikes during the same period in 2012.
He said the number of people who were injured as a result of road accidents increased from 232 in 2012 to 240 in 2013.
ASP Akonde attributed the causes of the accidents to wrongful overtaking and over speeding, fatigue driving, reckless driving and inconsiderable driving including abandonment of vehicles at the shoulders of roads.
He said the MTTU, Road Safety Commission and other stakeholders were doing their best in order to curb accidents and appealed to drivers to contribute to road safety.
