DCE restrains community mob action over death

Ave-Dakpa (V/R), Oct. 31, GNA Timely intervention by Mr James Gunu, the Akatsi-North District Chief Executive, prevented angry residents of Ave-Dakpa, on the Ho-Aflao road, from blocking the highway over the death of a pedestrian hit by a speeding vehicle recently.

Incensed by news of the death of Ophelia Eklu, 9, at the 37 Military Hospital where she was sent on referral, angry residents poured out to block the highway.

Eklu carrying water, was said to be crossing the street at around 1700 hours, when an Aflao-bound mini-bus hit her.

The youth claimed Ophelias demise was the 47th death in similar circumstances mainly school children over the past 23 years.

The mob, mainly the youth, were about to stall traffic with burning tyres and attack drivers to register their displeasure when Mr Gunu intervened.

He sympathized with the bereaved family and appealed to the community to exercise restraint while he took the responsibility to initiate moves to forestall such rampant accidents.

Mr Gunu said he was in total agreement with the community that road signs must be erected, with some re-engineering done.

He said Members of Parliament (MPs), whose constituencies were located along the highway, would also be meeting in Accra over the issue.

Mr.Gunu appealed to the Ghana High Authority (GHA) to quickly construct speed ramps in the town, while the Police mounted interim checkpoints.

He said he could sense that should a similar incident happen again the reaction may not be good.

Mr. Patrick Ahiabu, assembly member of the area and Presiding Member (PM) of the Akatsi-North Assembly, said Ophelia was the fourth person in the community and the second school pupil knocked down by reckless drivers this year.

I and a few other residents were nearly jailed when we organized a demonstration over the issue, and proceeded to construct speed ramps, following a similar death six years ago, he said.

Togbi Gidi Nyakpo 111, a sub-chief, commended the DCE for his wise move but told him to fulfil his promises.
