Kumasi, Dec. 06, GNA – The Amanfrom Prisons Camp of the Ghana Prisons Service won the overall Best Farmer Award at this year’s Farmers’ Day celebration, held at Amanfrom in the Ashanti Region.

The Camp has cultivated a total of 24 acres of maize, 40 acres of oil palm, two acres of vegetables, including cabbage, lettuce, spring onion, garden eggs, 300 pigs, 150 rabbits and 50 sheep.

For its prize, the Camp took home 30 cutlasses, weedicide, five pairs of Wellington boots, a box of key soap, a bicycle, 40- inch television set, a Knapsack sprayer and a certificate.

More than 20 individuals and organizations across the agricultural value chain were awarded for their immense contributions to enhancing food security, good agro practices and hard work.

They received prizes ranging from mattresses, cutlasses, weedicides, key soap, Wellington boots, rain coats, Knapsack sprayers, certificates, amongst others.

“Enhancing Small-Scale Agriculture towards Agribusiness Development,” was the theme for this year’s event.

Mr. Osei Assibey-Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), lauded the Ghana Prisons service and the other award winners for their dedicated services to the nation.

He entreated farmers to embrace commercial farming, saying they should move from the subsistence level of activities to agribusiness to enhance their livelihood.

The MCE urged Ghanaians to avail themselves of the ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ programme to help increase the country’s food stock substantially in order to reduce food importation.
