Nigerian troops kill 3 Boko Haram militants in clearance operation

ABUJA, Nov. 27, (Xinhua/GNA) - The Nigerian army on Wednesday said its troops on a clearance operation in the northeast region have continued to exert superiority against remnants of the terror group Boko Haram, killing at least three of them in a recent encounter.

Aminu Iliyasu, an army spokesman in the northeast region, said the troops came in contact with elements of Boko Haram terrorists at Sabon Gari, a known Boko Haram criminals' crossing point, into Sambisa Forest in the northern state of Borno on Tuesday.

Many others escaped into the forest with gunshot wounds following the gunfight with troops,  Iliyasu said.

Among the militants encountered during the operation, the army spokesman said, were those identified as "Boko Haram criminals' logistics couriers" who were at the time conveying various food items to the group in Sambisa Forest.

Food items and seven bicycles, as well as ammunition, all belonging to the Boko Haram fighters were recovered in the aftermath of the encounter, he said.

Boko Haram, which launched attacks in Nigeria's northeast region a decade ago, is known for its agenda to maintain a virtual caliphate in the most populous African country.
