SADC ministers meet in Tanzania to review security situation in DRC

DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 14, (Xinhua/GNA) - Ministers of foreign affairs and defense from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have begun an extraordinary meeting in the Tanzanian commercial capital Dar es Salaam to review security and peace situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

A statement issued by Tanzania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the ministers meeting under the SADC organ on double troika on defense and security were joined by defense and security organs from the 16 member countries regional bloc.

The Organ is mandated to steer and provide member states with direction regarding matters that threaten peace, security and stability in the region, including individual member states.

Palamagamba Kabudi, Tanzania's Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation said the extraordinary meeting was aimed at planning strategies that will help DRC to strengthen peace and end conflicts that threatened security in the vast central African country.

He said the meeting also helped SADC member countries of Tanzania, Malawi and South Africa which have peace keeping forces in DRC to review their missions' undertakings in the mineral-rich country.

"Our intention is to see to it that DRC finds a lasting solution to its myriad political conflicts," the statement quoted Kabudi as saying.

Stergomena Lawrence Tax, SADC Executive Secretary, expressed optimism that the meeting will come up with short and long term recommendations aimed restoring peace and security in DRC.

Tax observed that peace and security were the main pillars towards economic development in the SADC region as well as the entire African continent.
