Accra, Nov. 7, GNA - The Media Foundation
for West Africa (MFWA) has said as a champion of media independence and freedom
of expression it does not support any government’s interference in the work of
the media.
It also did not co-produce the ‘2018 Afro
Barometer Report’, which indicates in part that the public confidence in the
media is waning and that majority of Ghanaians are of the view that the
government should have the right to prevent the publication of certain kinds of
information.
The MFWA in a statement, said its Programme
Officer for Freedom of Expression, Mr. Muheeb Saeed, only cited that portion of
the Afro Barometer Report at this year’s ‘International Day to end impunity and
crimes against journalists’, to encourage journalists to demonstrate high
standards of professionalism and to put the public interest at the heart of
everything that they did to win back public confidence.
This was because the media needed the public
support to win the fight against impunity, it added.
The statement said one incident of arbitrary
arrest and detention had been recorded in Ghana in 2019 and this involved the
two journalists from ModernGhana.com.
