Youth urged to remain focused towards Ghana’s development

By Stephen Asante, GNA

Kumasi, May 17, GNA – Mr. Mumuni Sulemana, the Director in-charge of Programmes and Operations of the National Youth Authority (NYA), has called on the Ghanaian youth to remain focus towards championing the cause of the nation’s sustainable development.

“You must shelve your own personal interests and make sacrifices in whatever field of endeavour you may find yourselves to bring prosperity to our society,” he told a ‘Youth Parliament’ at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

He said the nation’s resolve to creating jobs to alleviate poverty could not be achieved without the active involvement of the youth.

This is because they were the critical workforce and strategic human resource base needed for the successful implementation of government’s development programmes and policies.

The ‘Youth Parliament’ was held under the supervision of the NYA and Parliament of Ghana, to bring together representatives of identifiable youth groups, organizations and professionals to discuss issues relating to the nation’s growth and development.

It was also designed to sensitize the participants to the parliamentary structure, procedure and processes in order to deepen good governance, while upholding the democratic credentials of the nation.

Mr. Sulemana stated that it was wrong for the youth to allow themselves to be coerced by self-seeking leaders, especially politicians, to engage in activities whose aftermath could create tension and pandemonium in the society.

They should be courageous in ‘saying no’ to all forms of violence irrespective of the rewards thereof or the personality behind.

“The youth have no reason to sell their dignity or conscience to anybody,” he remarked, and pointed out that it was also necessary for leaders to see the youth as worthy partners in development and not tools for perpetuating crime.

Mr. George Orwell Amponsah, Ashanti Regional Director of the NYA, assured that the Authority would continue to create the requisite platform for the youth to contribute positively towards the nation’s democratic dispensation.

They would also provide avenues for the youth to learn employable skills for their own benefit.

Mr. Amponsah charged the Ghanaian youth to avail themselves of leadership training programmes to help imbue in them the requisite skills, knowledge and qualities needed to influencing the society for the better.
