Sekondi, Dec. 6, GNA – The Western Regional Office of the Electoral Commission of Ghana has named Sefwi-Wiawso as the chosen centre for the proposed referendum slated for December 27 to carve out Western North Region from the Western Region.

In this regard, Sefwi-Wiawso would be the Regional Collation Centre for the Regional Returning Officer and his assistants who in turn supervise the work of District Returning Officers from the nine operational/eligible districts.

Mr Steve Opoku-Mensah, the Regional Electoral Commission head, told the Ghana News Agency after a stakeholders’ engagement that “the selection of Sefwi-Wiawso did not suggest that it will be the regional capital”.

He said in preparation for the referendum, the Commission undertook an on-line limited registration in the nine affected districts which saw the registration of 11,414 applicants with 29 challenged cases.

Mr Opoku-Mensah said the exhibition of the Provisional Voters Register saw the removal of 5037 names of deceased persons expunged from the register whiles only 180,747 checked their names from a list of 505,314 registered voters within the 2016 and 2018 registers.

Currently, transfer of votes and application for proxy is underway at the district offices with 947 polling stations preparing for the December 27 yes and no vote.

Mr Opoku-Mensah said notice of Poll would soon be displayed for voters to know some colours and what they represent.

Special voting would be conducted on December 24, 2018 at the district centres for security personnel, media as well as election officials who would be on duty on that day.

Mr Opoku-Mensah said, “It has always been the resolve of the EC to serve the people of Ghana and serve them well…it is our prayer that all stakeholders would play their roles as expected to ensure that their dreams become a reality”.
