Fear grips community over mysterious palm tree

By Kwabia Owusu-Mensah GNA

Sakora-Wonoo, (Ash) May 31, GNA – Sakora-Wonoo, a community in the Kwabre East District, is enveloped in fear and bewilderment following the mysterious ‘spring back to life’ of dead and decaying palm trees.

The palm tree had been felled by a palm-wine tapper, left to rot and had been producing red palm weevil larvae, known locally as “akokono”, a delicacy for many, and trametes hirsuta mushroom ‘domo’.

Some women routinely trekked to the outskirts of the town, where it had been lying, to harvest the mushroom.

They had gone as usual to look for the mushroom on Friday, May 26, only to shockingly discover the decaying palm tree standing upright.

This has led to speculations – claims of anger of the spirits and a foreboding of calamity, as the people desperately tried to find answers to the puzzle.

Nana Kwanin Appiah, the Head of the Royal Ekuona Family, who took journalists to the place to see for themselves the mysterious palm tree, said they were living in complete fear.

He said the youth of the town made a daring attempt to pull it down but were unsuccessful.

The palm-wine tapper, the man who felled it, was the first to have spotted the tree standing but reportedly kept what he saw to himself.

He is reported to have told the chiefs after the women had raised the alarm, about how in the course of tapping sweet palm wine in the area on Wednesday, May 24, he had heard an unusual sound that sent his dogs barking and running.

He turned only to find the dead palm tree standing erect.

The Queen, Nana Ama Nyarko, had already visited the place, which has become a magnet – pulling dozens of people including the clergy, to perform some esoteric rituals.

She told journalists that they had been struggling to understand what had happened.

She indicated that the assistance of the Nsumankwaahene (chief priest) of the Asantehene, was being sought to unravel the strange development.
