EC will declare Election 2012 results when ready - Dr Afari-Gyan

(By Francis Ameyibor GNA Special Correspondent Arusha, Tanzania)

Arusha (Tanzania), Dec. 5, GNA - Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), on Wednesday said the Commission will declare the results of Election 2012  when they are ready.

ťThe commission will announce the time and place for the declaration of the 2012 presidential election results when it is ready to do so,Ł Dr Afari-Gyan told the Ghana News Agency in a telephone interview.

The EC Chairman said: ťWe will not be limited by any timeline to announce the Presidential results, but will work within reasonable time to announce the resultsŁ.

He, however, reminded all Ghanaians that the EC was the only body in the country authorized by law to conduct public elections and to declare the results.

There has been a lot of pressure on the EC as most political parties are calling on the Commission to declare the results by 72 hours after the close of polls on December 7.

Dr Afari-Gyan also urged the general public to ignore any person or group that attempts to announce the final results of the 2012 general election.

The EC Chairman appealed to the media to abide by the Ghana Journalists Association, National Media Commission, and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association guidelines on election reporting to ensure that the press was not seen as the originator of any trouble.

He said it was only the EC's certified results that should be announced by the press and urged them to crosscheck any information, allegations and complaints or pieces of information that came their way before going public, to make them credible.
